Pastizzi my nizzi

This cheap, local go-to lived up to the hype.

We read about this stuff before we landed on the island but didn’t know what it would be like until the first bite. We passed several places with big signs that said “PASTIZZERIA” and we had to stop in and check out this cheap and very local staple. These things were around 30 cents a piece and came nice and warm. They looked like croissants but textured like super thin and crunchy filo. Most of them filled with cheese, peas or meat. They were greasy as ever. Some type of oil or butter all over these things. Had one on a napkin, on a wooden bench and within a few seconds, the oil had bled through into the wood. Whoa. Yuck, right? Nope, they were delicious.

They made for the cheapest lunch ever. Very filling and for less than a buck, you were set for the next few hours. I immediately understood why they were so popular. Not the healthiest option but anything this delicious never is. I have to give a special shoutout to this little spot called, Crystal Palace. Known to have the best pastizzi on the island, which we verified. True story. It was an dodgy spot where grumpy old men came to hangout, day drink and judge everyone who walked in to the place. A big bald guy with a old pit-stained t-shirt gave us a 3 toothed smile and a warm bag of pastizzis and we got out of there quick. We made a special trip out there and while it was a weird place, it was worth it.
